Can a landlord in PA turn down a Section 8 voucher?

I got an inquiry from someone with a housing voucher. I've never dealt with the program. Am I allowed to say no, or do I have to accept it?

    It depends on where the property is. PA doesn't have a statewide rule on this, but some places do. Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, and a few other towns and counties, don't let you turn someone down because a voucher pays part of the rent. Check your city or county before you answer.

    Even where you're allowed to say no, it's worth learning how it works before deciding. I've had voucher tenants for years. The housing authority's part of the rent shows up on time every month. The downside is the inspection and the paperwork.

    My duplex is outside any big city. I'll call the county housing authority and ask how their process works.

    Whatever you decide, screen that applicant the same way you screen everyone else: same income rule, same background check, same landlord references.
